Dow Jones, Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), Dow 30, DJ30 or simply Dow, is a stock market index.

Dow Jones is an index made of 30 large publicly owned companies (stocks), based in the United States.

Dow Jones, treats it's 30 stocks identically. For examples a rise of $1 in the stock of a $50M (market capitalization) company affects the index in the same way as a rise of $1 in the stock of a $300M (market capitalization) company.

Index values are useful for investors to track changes in market values over long periods of time.

Technical analysis uses index charts to identify changes in trends whether short-term, mid-term or long-term time frames.
